Supply of an area radiation monitoring system to China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR)

In March 2021, VF got an order from Shanghai Hapstar Mechanical and Electrical Equipment for the supply of an area neutron monitoring system to China Advanced Research Reactor (CARR) operated by China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) in Beijing. CARR is an advanced tank-in-pool type reactor using a D2O reflector for inverse neutron trap.
Later that year, VF received another order for the supply of a gamma area radiation monitoring system to the same site.
The complete scope of supply to CARR includes the following:

  • Ten (10) MDN-01 area neutron detectors 
  • Sixteen (16) MDG-08e area gamma detectors 
  • Two (2) RDU-22 data concentration and display units
  • Sixteen (16) ASU-50 alarm units
  • A set of portable activity meters

The supplied detectors and display units were connected to the existing radiation monitoring system provided by a local Chinese company many years ago. To be able to do so, the output from the radiation concentration and display units was customized and made compatible with the existing data acquisition system.

Other services provided included equipment manufacturing, factory testing, factory training, delivery on site, and support for installation and commissioning.
